Initially I was angry when I saw the Mochi standing at the exit with my mate. But once I have her face cupped in my hands, any annoyance is forgotten. To know she is safe is all I need. Proto has sent a significant phalanx of bots, and they are determined.

“Come.” I take her hand and escort her into the dark hole I know leads to the surface.

“I can’t see.” She whispers back at me, and I catch the fear in her voice.

My mate will not be afraid.

“Hold onto me, my eregri, I will guide you. I can see just fine.” I wrap my arm around her waist, luxuriating in having her close again. My vision is not as good as in the light, but it’s good enough.

“Were there many bots?” She asks, and I can tell she’s trying to keep her worries under control.

“There’s less now.” I grin to myself.

“Jesic called you the destroyer of all things. Is that true?” I feel her tremble in my grip.

“You do not need to fear me, little mate. My destruction is reserved for Proto alone.” My voice is rasping. It was all I could do not to stay to smash every single bot that came through the ruined doors. Which under any other circumstances, I would have done.

But not with her waiting for me. Emma called me to her. Except we do not have a thoughtbond. I might have claimed her but, try as I might, I cannot touch her mind.

This is wrong. All mated Gryn have a thoughtbond. Given the strength of mine against the other seniors, I had expected that with my mate it would have been even greater.

And yet there is nothing. A void where the bond should be, even though she is mine.

“Myk?” I feel her twist towards me and, in the gloom, she steps back and…disappears.

“Emma!” I reach for her and it’s only then I see the hole in the ground. The one she fell into. “Emma?” I call out.

The hole is too small for me to follow. Somewhere deep below, I can hear her cry out. My mind sheets with white. My heart beats as if it wants to leap from my chest to chase her. Thoughtbond or no, she is my mate, and nothing can change that.

“Vrex it!” I run my hands through my hair and look around for any way to descend to the lower levels.

“Gryn warrior?” I look up to see one of the Mochi males, Hisi looking at me with some concern.

“My mate…” I can hardly speak. “She’s down there, I have to go after her.” The unmistakable sound of a joykill cackle fills the air. The vrexing bots compute by making a sound akin to laughter as they perform their terrible tasks. “Did everyone else get out?”

The Mochi nods. “Let me assist you. It would be my honor.” He gives me a short bow.

“This is on me. No one else. Go to your mate and be with her. I will find mine and we will meet again, friend.
